Difference between Whey Protein and Collagen Protein

Oct 14, 2022

One is not necessarily better than the other, but instead they serve different purposes in the body.

Whey protein is derived from milk (minimal lactose – approx. 1-1.2g per serve as opposed to 12-14g in a cup of milk but be aware extremely sensitive patients may react to Whey protein) where as Collagen comes from the bones/cartilage, skin & connective tissue from animals.

Whey protein is a complete protein and contains a complete amino acid profile which contain branch chain amino acids that assist in muscle synthesis, recovery and repair.

Collagen contains only 3 amino acids (glycine, proline and hydroxyproline), however they are the ones that are lacking in your plant, whey and meat proteins. These 3 amino acids assist your body to build collagen which is the fibrous structure that provides strength and structure to your hair skin and nails EG: helps to keep your skin firm.

Both our surgical and medical weight loss patients will definitely benefit from both proteins but it is important to note that Collagen protein is easier to digest and softer on the stomach, so we would normally recommend that our surgical patients use just this one for the first 8-12wks after their surgery and add whey protein into their diet as part of their transition onto whole foods.

Collagen protein contains approx. 12-15g of protein per serve and Whey protein contains 30g per serve. Both options are an easy and effective way of adding protein to your diet, especially if you are struggling to reach your 60-80g minimum daily goal.

As they both come in a tasteless powder form that mixes easily with hot and cold water, you can quickly and simply add extra protein to your day by adding a scoop to your morning coffee, tea, juice or smoothie or add it to your water bottle and sip on it throughout the day.
