Wine and Weight Loss
Dec 11, 2025
Let’s be honest, many of us enjoy a glass of wine now and then. While there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s important to understand how alcohol can affect your weight loss goals.
Your body burns alcohol for energy before anything else – even fat and carbohydrates, as it is considered a toxin. So, if you’re on a weight loss journey it’s worth considering the following.
Do you relax with a glass of wine (or two) at the end of the day?
Alcohol can sometimes serve as a form of self-soothing. Consider alternative ways to relax, such as walking or yoga to help manage stress.
Do you have a glass of wine while cooking dinner?
Alcohol lowers dietary control, and often leads to cravings for sugary or high fat foods. Try using your wine glass for sparkling water with a slice of lemon instead.
Do you measure your pour?
A standard wine serving in Australia is 100ml, yet most restaurant serves are around 150ml, and home pours can be even more generous, meaning you could be consuming double what you think.
Are you influenced by others when you drink?
Social occasions can easily lead to overindulgence. Stay hydrated by alternating each glass of wine with water or a calorie free beverage, and avoid the headache!
After counting your weekly intake, how many standard drinks have you actually consumed? Aim to limit your alcohol intake to 2 to 4 standard drinks per week, with 3 to 4 alcohol-free days.
Why not explore one of the many non-alcoholic wines, beers or mocktails available – they can be a satisfying and refreshing alternative.
