Intragastric balloons are a non-surgical intervention to assist in weight loss. An inflatable balloon made of medical-grade silicone is placed inside the stomach through the mouth, either as a swallowable capsule or via endoscopy. Once in the stomach, the empty balloon is filled with fluid to occupy space, which reduces appetite and prolongs the feeling of fullness. Intragastric balloons are designed to remain in the stomach temporarily for a period ranging from 4 months up to 12 months, depending on the type of balloon.
