Endoscopic therapies
Endoscopic bariatric therapies are minimally invasive procedures that may be used to support weight loss and improve metabolic health without traditional surgery.
These procedures are performed using an endoscope (a flexible tube passed through the mouth into the stomach) and do not require surgical incisions.
They may provide an additional treatment option for selected people who do not wish to undergo metabolic bariatric surgery, are not suitable for surgery, or have not achieved their desired outcomes with other treatment approaches.
Types of endoscopic bariatric therapies
A number of endoscopic treatments for obesity and weight management have been developed, and this remains an evolving area of medicine.
Depending on availability and individual circumstances, these may include intragastric balloons, endoscopic procedures that reduce the size or capacity of the stomach, and procedures used to manage weight regain or complications following previous metabolic bariatric surgery.
Different procedures vary in how they work, the amount and durability of weight loss that may be achieved, potential side effects and complications, costs, and the duration of treatment.
Some therapies are temporary, while others create more lasting changes to the gastrointestinal tract.
Our GPs can help you understand the available options and the current evidence supporting these treatments.
Considering an endoscopic bariatric therapy?
Understanding where an endoscopic therapy fits among the available treatment options is an important part of deciding whether it may be appropriate for you.
At Re:You Health, our GPs can assess your health, previous treatments, preferences and goals, and help you understand the potential benefits, limitations and alternatives to endoscopic treatment.
Where a procedure may be appropriate, we can refer you to an experienced specialist and work collaboratively with your treating team.
Our goal is to help you understand where endoscopic therapies fit within the full range of evidence-based obesity treatments and make informed decisions about the approach that is right for you.
