Lifestyle Medicine
Lifestyle
Lifestyle modification is an important part of improving metabolic health and managing obesity, whether used on its own or alongside obesity management medications or metabolic bariatric surgery.
At Re:You Health, lifestyle care is not about restrictive diets, exercising perfectly or relying on willpower. Our approach focuses on practical, sustainable changes tailored to your health, treatment, preferences and stage of life.
Our Lifestyle Consultants work alongside our GPs and clinical network to provide support with nutrition, physical activity, muscle preservation and behaviour change.
Nutrition and healthy eating
Good nutrition is about more than weight loss.
Our approach focuses on meeting your nutritional needs and developing eating patterns that support metabolic health, muscle preservation and long-term wellbeing.
Depending on your needs and treatment pathway, support may include:
- developing a balanced and sustainable approach to eating
- ensuring adequate protein intake and overall nutrition
- preserving muscle mass during weight loss
- managing reduced appetite associated with obesity management medications
- nutritional support before and after metabolic bariatric surgery
- practical meal planning and strategies that fit your lifestyle
Where more specialised nutrition care is required, we work with experienced dietitians.
Our goal is to help you develop practical skills and confidence in making informed food choices without relying on fad diets, rigid rules or short-term solutions.
Physical activity, strength and function
Physical activity provides benefits at every stage of life, and any increase in movement can be valuable.
We support people to gradually increase physical activity in ways that are appropriate for their health, ability and circumstances.
An important focus of our approach is maintaining muscle mass, strength and physical function, particularly during weight loss, following bariatric surgery and as we age.
This may include increasing everyday movement, reducing sedentary behaviour, building aerobic fitness, incorporating resistance exercise and developing realistic, sustainable activity goals.
Where appropriate, we work with experienced exercise physiologists to provide individualised exercise assessment and prescription.
Behaviour change and long-term habits
Making sustainable changes takes time. Motivation can fluctuate, and setbacks are a normal part of long-term behaviour change.
Our Lifestyle Consultants can help you set realistic goals, identify habits and barriers to change, develop strategies for cravings and emotional eating, plan for challenging situations and build routines that support your health.
Some people may benefit from additional psychological support. Where appropriate, we can recommend involvement of a psychologist or other mental health professional.
Our goal is not to tell you to simply “eat less and move more.”
It is to help you develop a personalised approach to nutrition, movement and behaviour that supports your metabolic health and can be sustained over the long term.
Very Low Energy Diets (VLEDs)
Very Low Energy Diets (VLEDs) are evidence-based dietary treatments that use nutritionally formulated meal replacements to substantially reduce energy intake for a defined period of time.
They may be used as part of obesity and metabolic health management or to achieve specific clinical goals, such as improving metabolic health or preparing for surgery.
VLED programs can range from intensive approaches, where most or all meals are replaced with specially formulated products, to partial meal replacement plans tailored to individual needs and treatment goals.
At Re:You Health, VLEDs are used as part of an individualised treatment plan. Support may include medical assessment, selection of an appropriate approach, guidance on additional foods and supplementation, consideration of medications and medical conditions requiring closer monitoring, strategies to maintain adequate protein intake and muscle mass, and support with transitioning back to longer-term eating patterns.
VLEDs are not suitable for everyone. Our team can help determine whether this approach is appropriate for you and provide medical, lifestyle and dietetic support where needed.
