Sleeve gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most commonly performed metabolic bariatric procedures.
During surgery, a large portion of the stomach is permanently removed, leaving a smaller, tube-shaped stomach.
The procedure reduces the amount of food that can be comfortably consumed, but its effects extend beyond restriction alone. Sleeve gastrectomy also influences appetite regulation, hunger, satiety and metabolic health through changes in gastrointestinal hormones and other biological pathways.
As with all metabolic bariatric procedures, there are potential risks and long-term considerations. These include nutritional deficiencies, reflux symptoms, weight regain and the possibility that additional treatment may be required over time.
Individual assessment and long-term medical and nutritional follow-up are important.
